Better Community Engagement
Supporting Sustainable Practice
A National Conference to share the themes, experience and lessons coming from the Better Community Engagement Programme and to explore the concept of sustainable community engagement and how we achieve it.

Keynote Speaker:
Professor Margaret Ledwith - Professor in Community Development and Social Justice
Margaret Ledwith is one of the UK's most highly regarded community development practitioners and academics. Her first book, Participating in Transformation: Towards a Working Model of Community Empowerment, based on research undertaken with Hattersley people, became a key text for community development. Her last book, Community Development: A Critical Approach, adviocated a critical approach to communty development that locates theory in practice. Her most recent book, Participatory Practice, has been written in partnership with Professor Jane Springett. This book bridges the divide between ideas and practice and allows the development of the knowledge that is needed to bring about transformative social change.
She is Emeritus Professor of Community Development and Social Justice at the University of Cumbria. She is also one of the coordinators of the International Collaborative Action Research Network. For many years, she was a community worker/educator in Scotland and North-West England which forged the foundation of a lifetime commitment to social justice.
Workshop Themes:
The morning will be spent with representatives of some of the local demonstration projects sharing their experience of engaging with hard to reach groups using creative methods, undertaking training needs analysis, engaging with key groups like community councils, e-consultation, networking and communities of practice.
Led by some input and thoughts from keynote speakers the conference will focus in the afternoon on sustainable community engagement.
