Monifieth Town Centre Consultation
Angus Council is to consult with Monifieth residents about environmental improvement proposals totalling £250,000 for the town centre.
The council's Infrastructure Services Committee (Tuesday 20 January 2009) agreed to formally consult on proposals for town centre gateways; lighting; street furniture and interpretative town history boards; and a review of the road layout and pedestrian crossings in the High Street.
Committee convener David May said the council wanted to improve the appearance and the image of the town centre. "We had hoped to be able to take forward a redevelopment of Monifieth town centre in partnership with the private sector that have key interests in the town.
"However, those prospective private partners have concluded that it is not commercially viable for them to undertake any redevelopment at the present time.
"While this is disappointing there is still scope to improve the overall image of Monifieth as a retail centre and redress some of the issues identified in relation to pedestrian and vehicle movement. The council has therefore developed a range of environmental enhancement proposals which we will now formally consult on.
"We have already set aside £250,000 for improvement and enhancement works in Monifieth so residents and business are encouraged to give us their feedback on the proposals during the next couple of months. That feedback will help shape the detailed designs to be taken forward so I'd ask people to take the chance offered and have their say."
The committee agreed that a public consultation will take place during February and March. Presentations are being planned for the community council and the Monifieth Landward Partnership. There will also be a display of the proposals in the library and/or the ACCESS office. Dates will be announced in due course.
In summary the proposals for consideration are:
- the creation of Gateways (decorative entrance) features at each end of the town centre and boundary treatments, such as trees, on the south side of the High Street to help define the core retail/service centre
- the installation of a suite of high quality street furniture and interpretative town history boards along the High Street;
- upgrading street lighting by introducing feature lighting at focal points and incorporating decorative lighting columns and modern lanterns
- a signalised junction at the High Street / Reform Street junction, together with consideration of the installation of a third pedestrian crossing point close to Union Street.
- consideration of the road layout at the former petrol station and the library to improve the provision for pedestrians
- the widening of the footway at various points along the south side of the High Street by incorporating the adjacent landscape strip into the existing footway
- pavement build outs at bus stops and crossing points on the north side of the High Street.
