A successful application for funding was made to the Rural Voices Action Research Competition by the Forum. Thereafter the research questionnaire was developed which was distributed to 3,150 households across the Sidlaws. 350 face to face interviews were also undertaken, with a number of public meetings also being held.
The Muirhead youth shelter has been developed, providing a meeting place for young people.

Development and launch of the Newtyle Path Network.
Development of the Sidlaws Paths Network and ‘it’s a Doddle’ walks for health supported by the Community Learning and Development Service, Angus Council.
Following a number of anti social behaviour incidents in Newtyle, an open evening was held bringing together community representatives with Angus Community Planning Partnership representatives including Tayside Police, to consider what needs to change in Newtyle, how it can be achieved and who will resource it. Young people added their views to the discussion whilst taking part in a street football session. Following the event a follow up newsletter was issued to all households in the village detailing discussion and the findings from the open evening. Following the open evening a number of actions are being progressed.
The ‘Call a Pal’ project was relaunched with an updated flyer issued to every household within Newtyle as a result of the anti social behaviour incidents in the village. The initiative is a partnership project between Newtyle and Eassie Community Council, Tayside Police and the local community which aims to help people respond promptly and appropriately to vandalism and anti social behaviour.
With effect from 29 March 2004 an improved bus service between Forfar and Newtyle was introduced, which provides opportunities for employment, education and social activities for the residents in Newtyle not previously accessible by public transport.

Background information
Focus on Sidlaw / Newtyle Seminar - November 2004
Approximately 50 representatives of public sector organisations, businesses and community and voluntary groups took part in a seminar at the Piperdam Golf & Leisure Resort in November which explored the main issues and priorities for the Sidlaw and Newtyle area.
The event, which was hosted by the Angus Community Planning Partnership to develop local community planning, focused on priorities for improved partnership working in the Sidlaw and Newtyle area. This included strategic issues for organisations, work between local representatives of organisations in the area, and between communities, community groups and voluntary organisations.
Delegates received a progress report on community planning to date within Angus. Various presentations included information on the land use planning framework and updates on the work of the Sidlaws Housing Research, the Newtyle Path Network and the Birkhill and Muirhead Park Development Group.
A number of workshops gave delegates the opportunity to exchange views and ideas with other participants and identify a number of priority issues for the future development of the Sidlaw and Newtyle area.
A number of issues arising from the discussions included the following:
Improved transport provision
Increased road safety
Addressing the needs of young people - including improved facilities and activities
Developing links and improving communication between public sector organisations and community and voluntary sector groups
Accessing information and services including rural health services
Economic development including rural employment opportunities
All the points discussed at the seminar are included in the report (PDF 197KB). Following some further consultation, the findings will inform local action and the review of the Angus Community Plan.
Community Network Forum: Focusing on Road Safety
This event was held on 23 March 2005 at Wellbank Community Hall. Arranged as a follow-on from the seminar in November 2004, which identified road safety and signage issues as key priorities, members of the local community, community groups, elected members, council officers and partners decided on a number of actions as follows:
establishment of regular meetings on road safety and signage in the Sidlaw/Newtyle area
continue to encourage the use of ACCESSline and Crimestoppers for reporting of issues and incidents
identifying and progressing specific improvements in relation to road safety, utilising small sums of money available via Angus Council
The report from the meeting can be accessed by clicking here (PDF 196KB)
A follow-up Community Network Forum will be arranged for autumn/winter 2005 to discuss another of the key issues identified at the seminar.
