‘LET’S GET ENGAGED’

The voluntary sector and volunteering have a key role to play in relation to the planning and implementation of community planning in Angus.

A seminar was held in October 2004 to consider how the voluntary sector and volunteers can become involved in community planning in Angus.  It was agreed that the Angus Community Planning Partnership, Angus Association of Voluntary Organisations (AAVO) and the Volunteer Centre Angus (VCA) would use the findings from this seminar to form an Action Plan.

Also, in accordance with the 'Compact for Health', a partnership agreement between NHS Tayside and the Voluntary Sector, launched in May 2004, an Angus local working group was set up in May 2005 to take forward the key tasks from an Angus perspective.

At the meeting of this group held in June 2005 it was agreed to develop a single community planning action plan in relation to the voluntary sector and volunteering.  In order to achieve this, the Group revised the draft Action Plan from the community planning event held in October 2004 and incorporated the actions from the Compact for Health.

Following a consultation exercise the Action Plan was approved by the Angus Community Planning Partnership, AAVO and VCA in September 2005.

Voluntary Sector

A lot of work has been progressed to develop a policy statement  in relation to Angus Council’s links with the voluntary sector.

In addition to this, NHS Tayside has developed a compact with the voluntary sector.

Angus Association of Voluntary Organisations
(AAVO), based in Arbroath, is the local Council for Voluntary Service.  Councils for Voluntary Service (CVS) is the broad name given to the local umbrella organisations supporting the voluntary and community sector in Scotland.

AAVO is a member of the Angus Community Planning Partnership as well as being represented on a number of the thematic partnership groups .  A number of voluntary sector forums have been established across Angus, which provide an important community focus for the statutory bodies engaged in the different fields as follows:-

  • Drug & Alcohol Forum

  • Health & Homelessness Forum

  • Mental Health Forum

  • Children’s Services Forum

  • Community Care Forum

Volunteering

Volunteers make a unique and valuable contribution to the people and communities throughout Angus. Volunteering is an effective way of engaging people within their communities.  A number of the partner organisations utilise volunteers in terms of service provision, or to enhance the quality of life of many people in the communities throughout Angus. Volunteering policies are operational within Angus Council (click here) and NHS Tayside (click here).

Volunteer Centre Angus, based in Arbroath, is part of a national network of volunteer centres and is a key organisation for volunteering development in Angus, and is a member of the Angus Community Planning Partnership, as well as being represented on a number of the thematic partnership groups and the local area partnerships.

In Angus there is a wealth of experience and expertise relating to working with and involving volunteers.  Volunteer Centre Angus facilitates the following to help develop dialogue on volunteering issues:-

  • Volunteer Manager Forums - provide an opportunity for dialogue in creating positive change in volunteer management and help raise the profile of volunteering within a policy development context

  • Volunteer Voices - set up, with support from the Angus Community Planning Partnership, so that people in Angus could discuss their experiences of volunteering.
